A cross cultures and times, people have gone on pilgrimages to
find spiritual peace – Muslims have the hajj, Catholics may
walk El Camino de Santiago in Spain, and Anglican pilgrims head
to Canterbury. Walking is a way of uniting body and mind and
naturally boosting mood – but you don’t have to have a destination
to benefit: this walking meditation can be done in a hallway.
1. You’ll need an area that is about 10 metres long – a
hallway or a quiet outdoor space – for this exercise.
2. Stand for a moment and take a deep breath, relaxing the
body as you exhale. Bring your attention to the soles of
the feet, focusing on the contact with the ground.
3. Then, very slowly step one foot forwards: notice how the
heel lifts first then the ball of the foot before it moves.
As you place the heel on the floor in front of you before
rolling the rest of the foot down, notice how the back
foot starts to lift in readiness for the next step.
4. Continue stepping, focusing all your awareness on what
you can feel in the foot. When you reach the end of your
